A visitor is strolling aimlessly down the streets of a strange city on a sunny afternoon.   Passing an outdoor cafe, he spies two strangers at a table.  He stares at them for a moment, and then wanders over to them.   The three strangers gaze in silence at the table for a few minutes, then one of them looks up, smiles at the visitor and pushes his chair over, so that the visitor can take a seat.   No one has spoken yet.    The visitor moves a chair up, sits down,  and settles into the companionable silence of the table.  Odd behavior for total strangers?  

Not if there is an Othello board on the table.
